JAKE LONG SILHOUETTE

‘Silhouette’ is the first single from London based drummer/producer Jake Long, ahead of his debut album City Swamp, releasing May 17th via New Soil. The track demonstrates that Long’s skillset is formidable, his expert playing provides an urgent feel throughout while his production is crisp, spacious and atmospheric. Read the liner notes for City Swamp and you’ll find an absolutely stacked lineup of supporting musicians, all of whom are past collaborators of Long in his previous ensemble Maisha. Long states that his eponymous new project is equally inspired by King Tubby, Funkadelic and Mark Fisher (author of Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative)m all apparent on debut single ‘Silhouette’ as it evokes nighttime in the city. It’s shadowy, it’s pervasive, it’s expansive. The bass is deep underground, like seriously deep, while Hammond organs whirr by and horns riff lyrically. The piece ebbs and flows, increases in power and influence, slips downs into a spiritual and ominous middle section before ramping back up into an explosive guitars-wailing guns-blazing fusion climax.  -Adam Brown
